A Table For One Is Not Optimal

Why does divorce cost so much? Because it’s worth it, as the old joke goes.

During coronavirus, legal contract websites reported their basic end-of-marriage agreements spiked 34% due to increased demand. People realized that, in some cases, quarantining was better if they were on their own.

“You‘re lucky to have free time without someone right on top of you,” one married friend texted.

“It must be nice to have someone right on top of you every now and then,” I replied and we both LOLed.

From my perspective, Dating during COVID has been mostly a lost cause. I spent a few months this summer pursuing a woman, in a relationship that ended when she asked me to cosign on her new apartment.

There were also “walk-and-talk” meet-ups, as well as assorted video sessions. The year ended with potential, but collapsed just prior to Valentines Day, as the woman send me the dreaded “Can you talk for a sec?” text message.

The archetypal “it’s not you, it’s me” phone conversation followed: Telling me her friends thought she was crazy, since I checked all the boxes, save for the most important factor. In other words, “I like everything about you except you.”

She dangled the prospect of friendship, since we do have much in common. Realistically, that remains…
