Tied Up By Other People’s Kinks

Somebody’s kink may feel perfectly normal to them. Somebody else could be so embarrassed by their kink that they hide — and deny — all evidence of its existence. Stumbling onto someone’s kink can be an otherworldly experience, especially when you’re 11-to-13 years old and trying to navigate your own burgeoning sexuality.

Back in the 1970s, my friend Jimmy coaxed me into the Boy Scouts (for a brief period of time). His mom served as Den Mother for our meetings. After an hour or so, scouts would depart one by one. I was usually the last to leave, since I could walk home from their house.

One afternoon, as we waited for a tardy parent to collect their son, our fellow Scout casually asked Jimmy, “What does your dad do?”

Privately, I was excited that somebody else finally asked the question out loud. Jimmy’s father was seldom seen on the premises. When he did make an appearance, it was like their family went into lockdown and only resurfaced after he vanished once again.

“He’s a traveling salesman,” Jimmy replied.

“What does he sell?”

“Ladies’ underwear,” Jimmy replied.
